We have outlined below some of the most important driving rules of Iceland, in order to help awareness of different driving
laws in foreign countries.
Please use below rules as guide, but keep in mind that rules are subject to change and they are corrected as of November 2012.

Which Side of the Road?
Please drive on the RIGHT side of the road in Iceland.
Unique Country Driving Laws
- It is possible to use a mobile phone in car
- Motorist must have their lights on in day and night
- Special warning signs indicate possible danger, such as sharp bends. But sometimes there are no signs to reduce speed. Please drive carefully, and choose appropriate speed according to road and weather conditions
- It's absolutely forbidden to drive off marked roads or tracks
Speed Limits
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
- Urban areas: 50 km/h
- Rural areas: 80 km/h
- Motorways: 90 km/h
There could be speed changes indicated by road signs!
Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws
It is compulsory for all people inside the vehicle to wear a seatbelt.
- Children under 3 and measuring less than 150cm must be seated in an appropriate child restraint
