We have outlined below some of the most important driving rules of Germany, in order to help awareness of different driving
laws in foreign countries.

Please use below rules as guide, but keep in mind that rules are subject to change and they are corrected as of November 2012.

Which Side of the Road?

Please drive on the RIGHT side of the road in Germany.

Unique Country Driving Laws

  • Do not overtake school buses, slowing down or stationary
  • There are no tolls to pay in German autobahns
You can ask your Avis representative regarding correct tyres on your vehicle.

Speed Limits

For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
  • Urban areas: 30km/h or 50 km/h
  • Rural areas: 80 km/h or 100 km/h
  • Motorways: 110 km/h, 130 km/h and "unlimited"

There could be speed changes indicated by road signs!

Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws

It is compulsory for all people inside the vehicle to wear a seatbelt.
  • Children under 12 years old and less than 150cm must use correct child seat.

Please ask your Avis representative to help fit your child with the correct child seat.
